Ruth Tsuria serves as an Associate Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication Media and the Arts at Seton Hall University's College of Communication and the Arts, where she investigates critical intersections of digital technology, religious practice, and cultural norms.
Her research program centers on how digital platforms mediate religious authority and social norms, particularly regarding gender and sexuality. Dr. Tsuria develops theoretical frameworks examining power dynamics in online religious communities, analyzing cases from Jewish digital spaces to ex-evangelical Twitter movements. Her work consistently interrogates how technology both reinforces and challenges traditional religious structures through discourse analysis and cultural studies approaches.
Recent scholarship demonstrates evolving focus from foundational studies of digital religion toward emerging AI-religion interfaces and resistance tactics like religious meme culture. This trajectory reflects broader field developments while maintaining core commitments to gender and power analysis in digital sacred spaces.
Her significant contributions were recognized with the Inaugural Digital Religion Research Award from the Network for New Media, Religion, and Digital Culture.
Dr. Tsuria actively engages scholarly communities through keynote addresses at digital religion workshops and panel participation in initiatives like the ICCJ Webinar on Digital Interreligious Dialogue, while teaching core courses including Introduction to Digital Media and Communication Research Methods.
