She simultaneously maintains a position as research librarian and researcher at the National Library of Norway since 2013, where she previously served as Section Head (2007-2013).
Her academic credentials include:
- Born in 1966
- Cand. philol. (MA equivalent) in History from the University of Oslo
- Dr.art. (PhD equivalent) from the University of Oslo in 2008
Hemstad specializes in Norwegian and Nordic history from 1800-1930, with particular expertise in publicity, freedom of expression, civil society, nationalism, Scandinavianism, Nordic cooperation, book and media history, and transnational and transatlantic history. Her research examines how ideas, literature, and political concepts circulated across national borders in the Nordic region, particularly during the 19th century. She has made significant contributions to understanding Scandinavianism as a political and cultural movement and the transnational circulation of the Norwegian 1814 Constitution.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on transnational Nordic history, with particular attention to Scandinavian cultural diplomacy, emigrant communities, and media tactics employed in promoting Nordic cooperation. Hemstad's scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary relevance to Nordic identity and democratic development.
She has led multiple research projects including the UiO:Norden project "Publicity and freedom of expression in the Nordic countries, 1815-1900" (2016-2020), the NFR project "Literary Citizens of the World" (2018-2020), and serves as co-project leader for "Nordic Civil Societies" (2020-2023). She is currently a member of the project management group and pillar II coordinator for the UiO:Democracy project "Experiencing American Democracy. Nordic Encounters in Transnational Perspective" (ExAm) (2024-2027). Additionally, she serves as Country Editor for the Scandinavian Journal of History since 2023.
Hemstad's institutional affiliations span both academic and cultural heritage sectors, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach that connects historical scholarship with library science and cultural policy. Her work bridges the gap between academic research and public understanding of Nordic history and identity formation.
