Ruth Hemus is a Professor of French and Visual Arts at Royal Holloway University of London, affiliated with the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the School of Humanities. She held leadership roles including Head of Department (2021-24), Deputy Executive Dean (2023-24), and Director of the Humanities and Arts Research Institute (2020-23). Her research focuses on avant-garde movements, particularly Dada and Surrealism, emphasizing women’s contributions. She authored Dada's Women (2009) and The Poetry of Céline Arnauld (2020), which reposition overlooked female figures in art history. Her work bridges academia and public engagement, including collaborations with museums like the Tate and Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. Hemus is a recipient of the College Excellence Teaching Prize (2017) and Gapper Prize Commendation (2010).
Her research interests span avant-garde literature, performance art, and gender studies. She has supervised postgraduate work on topics like surrealist women’s visual art and postwar feminist art. Active in education, she designed courses such as Wanton Women: Artists and Writers of the French Avant-Garde. Current roles include resuming her departmental leadership in 2025 after a sabbatical.
