Ruth Heidelberger, MD, PhD, is a Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's McGovern Medical School and holds the Frederic B. Asche Chair in Ophthalmology. Her research focuses on presynaptic plasticity and synaptic communication in retinal neurons, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for synaptopathic disorders. She earned her undergraduate, graduate, and medical degrees at Stony Brook University, trained under Nobel laureates Paul C. Lauterbur and Erwin Neher, and joined the faculty in 1996.
- Education:
- Stony Brook University (undergraduate, graduate, and medical degrees)
- Postdoctoral training at Max Planck Institute under Erwin Neher
The Heidelberger Laboratory investigates presynaptic mechanisms in retinal photoreceptors and bipolar cells, with a focus on syntaxin 3B's role in synaptic vesicle dynamics and its mutations linked to retinal dystrophy. Her work bridges molecular neuroscience and clinical ophthalmology to develop vision restoration strategies post-photoreceptor loss.
Analysis of her publications reveals trends in understanding synaptic ribbons, SNARE proteins, and calcium signaling in retinal function. Collaborative studies with colleagues like Thoreson and Adachi highlight interdisciplinary approaches to exocytosis and neuroimmunology.
The laboratory's work is integrated into broader efforts to map synaptic communication and modulate neurotransmitter release through genetic and physiological models, including mast cell exocytosis and computational modeling of synaptic release.
