معرفی
Dr Ruth Fisher is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering and Sustainability within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). She is an Education-Focused Academic dedicated to inspiring students about sustainability and the positive impacts of environmental engineering.
Education:
- PhD (2018) – Investigating odour emissions from biosolids processing in wastewater treatment plants.
Research Interests:
Dr Fisher’s research integrates chemical engineering principles with systems thinking to improve the sustainability and performance of waste management systems. She focuses on:
- Odour measurement, modelling and management across wastewater and biosolids processing trains.
- Life-cycle assessment of biosolids treatment technologies.
- Nutrient recovery and circular-economy approaches in municipal wastewater treatment.
- Environmental impacts of emerging contaminants such as microfibres from textiles.
- Stakeholder engagement and sensory science to translate odour science into practical community-focused solutions.
Publication Trends:
Between 2016 and 2025 Dr Fisher has produced a prolific body of work (>30 outputs) that charts the evolution of odour science from fundamental identification of volatile sulfur and organic compounds toward holistic sustainability frameworks coupling LCA, nutrient recovery and community engagement. Recent work expands beyond biosolids to synthetic-turf emissions and textile microfibre release, demonstrating a broadening portfolio aimed at system-level environmental protection.
Scientific Awards:
No specific honours, medals or fellowships are mentioned in the supplied text.
Advising & Grants:
While individual students are not named, Dr Fisher actively mentors coursework and research students as part of her education-focused role. Her research has been supported by the CRC for Low Carbon Living project RP2008 “Beneficial Reuse of Biosolids”, and she has collaborated with industry partners including Sydney Water, Hunter Water, and Suez, leveraging these partnerships to create real-world impact and student placement opportunities.
Laboratories & Teams:
Dr Fisher is a core member of the Odour Laboratory at UNSW, working alongside Professor Richard Stuetz and interdisciplinary teams spanning environmental engineers, chemists, sensory scientists and social researchers. The group maintains advanced GC-MS/Olfactometry facilities and flux-chamber systems to quantify and characterise odorous emissions from wastewater, biosolids, recycled-water schemes and emerging materials such as synthetic turf.
