Ruth First was a prominent anti-apartheid activist, journalist, and academic. She served as the director of research at the Center for African Studies at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. Her work focused on exposing injustices under apartheid, including the Bethal farm labor scandal, and she was a vocal member of the Communist Party. First was arrested in 1963 and exiled from South Africa, later settling in Mozambique with her husband, Joe Slovo. Tragically, she was assassinated in 1982 when a parcel bomb sent via South Africa exploded in her office. Her legacy is commemorated through the Ruth First Memorial Lecture series at Brandeis University, which addresses themes of black liberation and global education reform.
Her career included reporting for the Guardian, a banned radical weekly, and authoring works like 117 Days, detailing her imprisonment. The lecture series, established in her honor, highlights her commitment to social justice and academic freedom.
