Ruth Effinowicz

Dr. Ruth Effinowicz is a Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Centre of Expertise on Japan at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law. She also serves as the Supervising Editor of the Zeitschrift für Japanisches Recht / Journal of Japanese Law. Her academic background includes:

• Doctoral dissertation in Japanese Law from the University of Cologne
• LL.M. and M.A. in Japanese Studies from the University of Cologne
• Legal studies at Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne)

Her research primarily explores Japanese law and comparative law, with a focus on interdisciplinary legal frameworks and transnational implications.

In 2024, she received the Young Academy Fellowship from the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg—a three-year grant supporting innovative interdisciplinary research beyond traditional academic institutions.

She leads the Centre of Expertise on Japan, advancing scholarly exchange and publications in Japanese legal studies.
