Ruth Coleman is an Assistant Professor of Piano at Bob Jones University, where she teaches applied piano, hymn improvisation, and accompanies the Collegiate Choir. She has been a faculty member since 1988, following extensive experience as a private piano instructor in Christian schools. Coleman holds both a B.A. and M.A. in Piano Performance from Bob Jones University, where she studied under Laurence Morton.
Her research focuses on piano pedagogy, hymn improvisation techniques, and church music applications. She developed a step-by-step method for congregational hymn playing, leading to the co-authorship of the Hymnproviser: Text/Workbook series. Additionally, she has published choral, piano, and violin arrangements, often collaborating with family members.
Coleman maintains active involvement in professional organizations like Music Teachers National Association and its state/local chapters. She serves as pianist and organist at Hampton Park Baptist Church in Greenville, where she co-teaches women's Bible studies. Her career integrates academic instruction, compositional work, and ongoing church ministry.
