Ruth Cameron is a British materials scientist and Professor at the University of Cambridge. She serves as joint head of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy since October 2020 and co-director of the Cambridge Centre for Medical Materials.
Her research focuses on materials that interact therapeutically with the body, with particular emphasis on musculoskeletal repair. Her work encompasses bioactive biodegradable composites, biodegradable polymers, tissue engineered scaffolds, and surface patterning. She collaborates with Serena Best on collagen scaffolds for the spin-out company Orthomimetics.
Professor Cameron has received numerous prestigious awards for her contributions to biomaterials science and regenerative medicine, including:
- United Kingdom Society for Biomaterials President's Prize (2017)
- Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Griffith Medal & Prize (2017)
- Institute of Physics Rosalind Franklin Medal and Prize (2019)
- Engineering and Physical Sciences Suffrage Science award (2021)
- Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2023)
She completed her PhD in physics at the University of Cambridge and joined the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in 1993. Since 2006, she has co-led the Cambridge Centre for Medical Materials with Serena Best, making them the first Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council fellowship to job share. She is also a Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge and was a founder member of the Pfizer Institute for Pharmaceutical Materials Science.
