Ruth Asch is an Associate Research Scientist in Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, affiliated with the Translational Brain Imaging Program and the Janeway Society. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Cincinnati (2020) and dual BA degrees in Biological Sciences and Psychology from Mount Holyoke College (2011). Her research focuses on neuroimaging techniques to study synaptic density and metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) in psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and substance use disorders.
Key research areas include developing non-invasive PET imaging methods for synaptic density assessment, exploring mGluR5 as a biomarker for trauma and cannabis use interactions, and investigating neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood and anxiety disorders. Her work has led to advancements in understanding synaptic pathology in psychiatric conditions and identifying novel therapeutic targets.
Awards include travel awards from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and Society of Biological Psychiatry, alongside academic accolades from Mount Holyoke College. Notable collaborations involve researchers like Irina Esterlis, Maggie Taylor Davis, and Richard Carson. She contributes to interdisciplinary teams studying translational neuroscience and clinical applications of imaging biomarkers.
Ruth’s research also addresses psychological resilience in aging veterans and integrates artificial intelligence for predicting symptom recovery in adolescents with concussions. Her findings have been published in high-impact journals such as Neuropsychopharmacology, Biological Psychiatry, and EJNMMI Research.
