Ruth Aronoff is an Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at Furman University, serving as Faculty Council At-Large Representative. She specializes in continental formation, tectonic plate dynamics, and planetary evolution, integrating field studies with analytical techniques. Her research focuses on Proterozoic tectonics, metamorphic processes, and energy resource frameworks.
Education:
- B.A. in Geosciences and Anthropology, Williams College
- Ph.D. in Geology and Tectonics, Purdue University
Research Interests: Structural geology, tectonics, geochronology, metamorphic petrology, geodynamics, energy resources, and DEI in science. Current projects explore North America's Proterozoic tectonic development, continental lithosphere formation, and energy transition strategies.
Funding & Collaboration: Supported by NSF, Furman University, and ExxonMobil. Collaborates with Furman undergraduates and scientists at universities and government agencies on multi-method approaches (fieldwork, numerical models, lab techniques).
Teaching & Mentoring: Focuses on skill development in scientific collaboration and project teams. Supervises research projects addressing metamorphic processes, continental dynamics, and energy systems.
Labs/Teams: Leads interdisciplinary research teams analyzing tectonic histories through structural, petrologic, and geophysical methods. Engages in cross-institutional partnerships for continental evolution studies.
