Rutger van de Sande

Dr. Rutger van de Sande serves as Professor (lector) in Learning Design at Fontys University of Applied Sciences' School of Teacher Education in Tilburg, and leads the Youth Education for Society (YES) knowledge center established in 2021. This collaborative initiative unites 11 lecturers focused on advancing knowledge about children's/youth development and the professionals supporting them.

His research repositions educators as intentional designers of learning experiences—comparable to architects and software developers—analyzing both routine classroom actions and innovative improvisation. Key interests include Educational Design, Teacher Professionalization, and the transformation of educational situations through practitioner expertise, emphasizing how teachers systematically convert existing conditions into desired outcomes.

As leading lector of YES, van de Sande coordinates cross-disciplinary knowledge development while serving on HOVO Brabant's advisory board. Previously, he held roles as educator, team leader, and lector in Beta Didactics at the same institution, demonstrating sustained commitment to teacher training and applied educational research within Fontys' framework.
