Professor Russell Varley is a leading academic and researcher in polymer chemistry and composite materials at RMIT University's School of Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide (1998) and has over 30 years of experience in academia and industry, including roles at CSIRO and Deakin University. His research focuses on developing next-generation carbon fiber composites, sustainable materials, and advanced polymer systems for aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy sectors.
Research Interests: His work emphasizes the design of high-performance polymer composites, carbon fiber synthesis, self-healing materials, and fire-retardant resins. Recent projects include novel rapid oxidation methods for carbon fiber production and sustainable alternatives to petrochemical-based materials.
Industry Collaboration: Professor Varley leads externally funded projects addressing industrial challenges in material science and sustainability, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 7, 9, 12). He collaborates with global industries and serves as interim chair of the Advanced Fibre Cluster Group.
Grants & Supervision: He supervises PhD/Master's students and oversees research on composite manufacturing, material characterization, and green chemistry. His work is published in top journals like Composites Part A, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, and Sustainable Materials and Technologies.
