Russell Marcus is the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Teaching Excellence in the Department of Philosophy at Hamilton College, where he has taught since 2007. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from The Graduate Center, City University of New York and a B.A. from Swarthmore College. Marcus specializes in philosophy of mathematics and philosophical pedagogy, with teaching competencies spanning logic, modern philosophy, philosophy of language, and epistemology.
His research explores foundational questions in mathematical epistemology and innovative teaching methodologies. Marcus has developed pedagogical frameworks like Team-Based Learning and microwriting techniques to enhance critical thinking. He founded and directs the Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP), a laboratory for pedagogical innovation that brings together students and educators for intensive philosophical study.
Marcus has received numerous honors including the American Philosophical Association's Prize for Excellence in Philosophy Teaching (2020) and multiple teaching awards from Hamilton College. He actively mentors students, having supervised over 40 undergraduate theses on diverse philosophical topics from mathematical epistemology to ethics. As a board member of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, he organizes teaching hubs at national conferences and advocates for pedagogical innovation.
