Gillian Russell

Gillian Russell is a Professor in the School of Philosophy at The Australian National University (ANU). She holds visiting appointments as a Professorial Fellow at the Arché Research Center, University of St Andrews, Scotland. Her academic journey includes positions at Washington University in St Louis (tenured 2011) and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she was Alumni Distinguished Professor. Russell’s work focuses on the philosophy of logic and language, addressing metaphysical, epistemological, and social dimensions of logic.

Her publications explore logical normativity, feminist logic frameworks, and the analytic/synthetic distinction. Recent work challenges traditional views on logical consequence and its societal impacts. Awards include Alumni Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Grants: ANU Futures Scheme (2025–2027) supports her research. She advises on interdisciplinary projects at ANU and collaborates with Dianoia Research Institute in Melbourne. Russell is affiliated with ANU’s philosophy department and international research networks like Arché.
