Russell Hoffmann is Assistant Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music, with affiliations in both the Piano department and the Music Theory, Harmony, and Ear Training department. He is an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger, and recording artist specializing in jazz, Latin, and pop music.
His research and artistic interests span jazz performance, keyboard comping, ensemble techniques, and music theory. He emphasizes expressive musicality, physical technique, and deep stylistic understanding in both performance and pedagogy. Hoffmann is passionate about helping students discover their unique musical voice through disciplined craft and personal commitment.
Hoffmann has authored educational materials including workbooks on keyboard comping and ensemble performance, and is co-author of Berklee Practice Method: Keyboard. He teaches various courses at Berklee and has contributed to online music education through Berklee Online, including courses in Music Theory.
As a clinician, he has represented Berklee internationally at programs in Italy (Umbria Jazz Festival), Taiwan, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, and South Korea, demonstrating his active engagement in global music education.
Hoffmann has performed with jazz luminaries such as Jack McDuff, James Moody, Billy Hart, Donald Harrison, Bobby McFerrin, and Peter Leitch. He has served as musical director for Concord recording artist Marlena Shaw and the University of Minnesota's 'Twelve Moods for Jazz' Langston Hughes project, highlighting his leadership in professional music settings.
