Russell Garwood is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Manchester. His research focuses on palaeontology, utilizing X-ray computed tomography (CT) and advanced imaging techniques to study arthropod evolution, fossil morphology, and phylogenetic relationships. He is a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects such as the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ancient Life (ICAL). Garwood's work integrates computational methods, including deep learning for fossil image analysis, and has led to significant contributions in understanding arthropod phylogeny and evolutionary processes.
- Affiliations: University of Manchester, Natural History Museum, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (visiting researcher).
- Research Interests: Fossil arthropods, tomographic imaging, evolutionary simulations, and the application of computational tools in palaeontology.
- Awards: Royal Commission of 1851 Research Fellow, Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship, Wollaston Fund recipient.
Garwood leads projects on topics such as ecosystem engineering impacts and macroevolutionary dynamics, and has advised numerous PhD students. His datasets include groundbreaking work on fossil arthropods and software tools like TREvoSim and REvoSim. He actively engages in science communication through media and social platforms.
