Dr. Rupert Holzinger is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science, within the Department of Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry. His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nanoplastics, and aerosol processes. He leads studies on PTR-MS instrumentation, cloud-aerosol interactions, and environmental pollution. Holzinger is an editor for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics and founder of ptrms-analysis.com, supporting scientists in PTR-MS data analysis. His work includes investigating nanoplastics in remote environments, VOC measurement methodologies, and climate-related aerosol dynamics. Key contributions involve developing standard calibration protocols for PTR-MS and advancing understanding of biogenic emissions' roles in atmospheric chemistry.
Research interests span environmental chemistry, climate change, and analytical methodologies. He has published extensively on nanoplastics transport, VOC analysis techniques, and aerosol-cloud interactions. Collaborative projects include the Ruisdael Observatory and the ACTRIS infrastructure for atmospheric research. Holzinger has supervised three research projects and delivered invited lectures, such as his 2013 talk on UV-B radiation effects on plant volatiles.
Current activities include assessing nanoplastics in glaciers and mussels, developing SI-traceable calibration standards, and exploring organic nitrate partitioning. His work bridges fundamental atmospheric science with applied environmental monitoring, emphasizing precision instrumentation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
