Dr. Runyu Zou is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and Exposome Science at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, UMC Utrecht, with primary affiliation at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. His research integrates epidemiological methods with exposure science to investigate how environmental factors impact human health across the lifespan.
Dr. Zou's primary research interests include:
- Environmental epidemiology of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and reproductive health
- Ambient pollutants and maternal-child health outcomes
- Neurodevelopment in relation to prenatal environmental exposures
- Exposome science and biomonitoring techniques
- Micro- and nanoplastics exposure assessment and health impacts
- Chemical mixtures and female fertility
His recent publication record demonstrates a sophisticated approach to environmental health research, with increasing focus on novel contaminants like micro- and nanoplastics while maintaining strong work on traditional environmental epidemiology topics. Dr. Zou frequently employs advanced statistical methods including meta-analyses, cohort studies, and instrumental variable approaches to address methodological challenges in exposure assessment and causal inference. His current projects include the EU-FREIA project investigating EDCs and female reproductive health, and the AURORA Project examining micro- and nanoplastics exposure during pregnancy.
Dr. Zou is an active participant in the Dynamics of Youth (DoY) research theme and the Utrecht Exposome Hub, contributing to interdisciplinary efforts that bridge veterinary medicine, public health, and environmental science to understand how exposures shape human development and health outcomes.
