Rune Karlsen is a Professor at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, and a leading scholar in political communication, media effects, and election research. He is affiliated with the Norwegian Election Research Program and serves as head of the master’s program in Political Communication. Previously, he held roles at the Institute for Social Research and as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Political Science.
His research focuses on political communication dynamics, media influence on public opinion, and electoral behavior. Key projects include studying campaign strategies, media consumption patterns, and the role of social media in political engagement. Karlsen has led major research initiatives such as the Norwegian National Election Studies (2017 and 2021) and the 'KnowAI' project exploring AI’s impact on political knowledge and democracy.
Publications span topics like voter behavior, elite communication, and digital media’s role in political polarization. He co-edits works on parliamentary candidates, Nordic political communication, and ministerial adviser roles.
