Rumi Chunara is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Computer Science & Engineering at New York University, holding dual roles in the School of Global Public Health and the Tandon School of Engineering. She directs the Center for Health Data Science and leads the Chunara Lab, focused on computational methods for population health surveillance and equity. Her work spans machine learning, data mining, and causal inference to address public health challenges. Dr. Chunara earned a PhD from Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology and a BSc from Caltech.
Research emphasizes fair algorithm design, integrating multi-source data (social media, satellite imagery, clinical records) for health monitoring. Notable projects include developing Surveillance 3.0 frameworks, causal modeling for health disparities, and ethical AI applications in global health. She has received NSF CAREER and Gates Foundation grants, and her lab collaborates internationally on initiatives like the NIH-funded DS-I Africa program.
Awards include the 2019 NSF CAREER Award and multiple conference recognitions. Teaching includes courses on data science in public health. Advising focuses on interdisciplinary PhD students working at the health-tech interface. The lab also runs a monthly reading group on Machine Learning in Public Health.
