Ruma Banerjee is the Vincent Massey Collegiate Professor of Biological Chemistry and Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her research focuses on enzymes and metabolic pathways involved in sulfur networks and vitamin B12 trafficking. She holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biophysics from the University of Michigan (1987) and has been a Lecturer in Biological Chemistry since 1991.
- Education: Postdoctoral Fellow, Biophysics, University of Michigan (1987)
- Lecturer Position: University of Michigan Medical School (1991–present)
Her research investigates H2S biogenesis, B12 cofactor utilization, and their roles in redox and metabolic pathways. Techniques include spectroscopy, structural biology, and multi-omics approaches. Notable achievements include election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2023) for scientific leadership.
Recent studies highlight H2S signaling's impact on mitochondrial function and metabolic reprogramming, with implications for disease mechanisms. Her lab has published extensively on B12 trafficking defects and their clinical relevance, including work on methylmalonic aciduria and enzyme repair pathways.
- Awards: Member, American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2023)
- Lab Leadership: Mentors students like Harsha Gouda, with grants supporting interdisciplinary research
The Banerjee Lab collaborates on projects addressing sulfur metabolism, leveraging mouse models and cellular systems to bridge basic science and clinical applications.
