Rubin Patterson serves as the 28th Dean of Howard University's College of Arts & Sciences since 2019, leading initiatives in curricular innovation, environmental justice, and global partnerships. Previously, he was a tenured Professor and Chair at the University of Toledo, specializing in Sociology and Africana Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Howard University (1992), an M.S. in Engineering Management from George Washington University, and a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Physics and Electrical Engineering from Florida State University.
His research focuses on environmental justice, political economy of fossil fuels, and African development. He has secured over $6 million in grants from NSF, National Park Service, and Mellon Foundation. Key projects include the forthcoming Sage Encyclopedia of Environmental Justice (2026) and the National Education Equity Lab. His work bridges environmental science with sociopolitical justice, emphasizing climate justice and diasporic perspectives.
Dean Patterson has established Howard's Department of Earth, Environment, and Equity, and enhanced international programs like Study Abroad. His administrative roles include Directorships in Southern African Studies and Africana Studies. Notable publications include Black Toledo (documenting African American history) and Greening Africana Studies.
