Ruben Perez-Hidalgo

Ruben Perez-Hidalgo is a Lecturer in Spanish Studies at the University of Sydney, School of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Hispanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an MA in English Literature from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a BA in English Linguistics and Literature from the University of Seville.

Research Focus

• Transatlantic analysis of radical politics
• Working-class culture in early 20th-century Mexico and Spain
• Media and populist discourse
• Visual politics of diasporic communities
• Neoliberalism and cultural identity

His recent work examines digital symbolism in Catalan diaspora communities (2024), cinematic representations of democracy (2022), and comparative populist movements (2023). Publications span literary analysis, social theory, and cultural anthropology.
