Ruben Höppner is a Researcher at the Institute of Slavic Studies, University of Potsdam, working under Prof. Dr. Alexander Wöll at the Chair of Culture and Literature of Central and Eastern Europe since October 2021. His role involves research support in Slavic literatures and urban cultural studies across Central and Eastern Europe.
His academic background includes:
- MA in Cultures and Literatures of Central and Eastern Europe from Humboldt University Berlin (2018-2021), thesis: "Seriality in European Prefabricated Housing Rap. A Comparative Text Analysis of Rap Texts from 2003 to 2010 from Germany and the Czech Republic"
- BA in Slavic Languages and Literatures (Russian/Bohemian Studies) and German Literature from Humboldt University Berlin (2013-2018), thesis: "Comparison of Translation Strategies into German in Jaroslav Hašek’s ‘Švejk’"
- Erasmus study period at Charles University Prague (2015-2016)
Höppner specializes in Hip Hop culture across Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, and Slovakia, with a focus on Czech-language rap's relationship to urban spaces and authenticity. His work bridges text-space theory, Slavic pop culture, and translatology, examining how spatial narratives function in gangsta rap lyrics through European and US comparative frameworks. Current research analyzes Czech rap lyrics from 1984-2014 to determine whether their distinctive sensitivity represents a cultural anomaly or historically rooted phenomenon.
As part of the Culture and Literature of Central and Eastern Europe team, he collaborates with Dr. Tetiana Getz, Dr. Pavel Golubev, and Davina Lang on projects exploring Slavic linguistic and cultural intersections, while contributing to the chair's teaching activities in Slavic studies.
