Ruben Delgado

Rubén Delgado is an Associate Professor at Hampton University’s School of Science, specializing in Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. He serves as Director of the Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Principal Investigator (PI) of the Hampton University Lidar Laboratory. His roles include leading NASA’s Increasing Participation for Minority Serving Institutions program and managing the Unified Ceilometer Network (UCN). Dr. Delgado also coordinates federally sponsored consortia promoting diversity in STEM education.

Education:

Research Interests: Dr. Delgado integrates ground-based meteorological measurements with remote sensing technologies (e.g., lidar systems, microwave radiometers) to study air quality, wind energy dynamics, and atmospheric boundary layer processes. His work emphasizes algorithm development for PBL height estimation, cybersecurity in data analysis, and open-source cloud computing solutions. Notable research areas include ozone chemistry, aerosol dynamics, and wildfire smoke transport impacts.

Grants & Collaborations: He has secured PI roles in multiple proposals, including field campaigns on wind energy assessment and air quality. His federally funded projects address diversity, equity, and accessibility in STEM for underrepresented minorities.

Labs & Teams: Leads the Hampton University Lidar Laboratory (HULL) and collaborates with NOAA’s Remote Sensing Technology Center and NASA’s Earth Science initiatives. His team develops advanced lidar applications for environmental monitoring and climate studies.
