Royston Gustavson

Royston Gustavson is a Professor at The Australian National University (ANU) and serves as the university’s inaugural Dean (Academic Quality). He holds dual affiliations with the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods (CSRM) and POLIS: The Centre for Social Policy Research. His administrative roles include Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and previous leadership positions such as Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) and Associate Dean (Education) in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Royston holds a BA Hons (Queensland), MBA, and PhD (Melbourne), alongside prestigious fellowships including Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and Fellowships from the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Institute of Managers and Leaders Australia and New Zealand.

His research focuses on the History of the Book, with specializations in 16th-century music printing (particularly German-speaking regions and Nuremberg), Icelandic book history, and 19th-century Australian music publishing. He explores intersections between cultural heritage, publishing economics, and historical preservation. His work spans musicology, bibliography, and the material culture of early printed music.

Royston’s publications analyze music editions, catalogues, and institutional collections, revealing insights into historical publishing practices and cultural transmission. His articles highlight methodological innovations in tracing musical and textual histories through archival materials.
