Dr Roy Norton is a Senior Research Fellow in Spanish at Pembroke College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on Spanish Golden Age literature (16th-17th centuries), particularly theatre and religious culture. He recently completed a critical edition of Lope de Vega’s saint’s play San Nicolás de Tolentino and is currently investigating St Teresa of Ávila’s reception in early modern England, Spanish depictions of Tudor monarchs, and innuendo in Lope de Vega’s religious drama. He serves on the editorial board of the Bulletin of the Comediantes and evaluates research for Spain’s Agencia Estatal de Investigación.
Teaching includes Spanish Golden-Age literature (FHS papers VII/X), language instruction, and Spanish Preliminary Examination preparation. His work bridges literary analysis with cultural and political history, emphasizing cross-cultural exchanges between Spain and England. Recent scholarship highlights themes of national identity in Lope de Vega’s plays, irony in Calderón’s political drama, and the role of translation in religious contexts.
Publications span critical editions, peer-reviewed articles, and book reviews, with a focus on playwrights like Lope de Vega and Calderón. Current projects include a companion volume to Calderón de la Barca’s works.
