Roy Mariuzza is a Professor at the University of Maryland, affiliated with the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR). His research focuses on structural immunology, T cell receptor (TCR) recognition, and immune checkpoint receptors like LAG3. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Paris (1986) and M.S./B.S. degrees from Yale University (1978).
Research Interests: Structural Immunology, T cell activation mechanisms, NK cell receptor function, cancer neoantigen recognition, and vaccine design against hepatitis C and SARS-CoV-2. His work combines structural biology techniques (X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM) with computational modeling to study antigen-antibody interactions and immune system dynamics.
Recent Articles Highlight Trends in: (1) Structural basis of TCR recognition of cancer neoantigens, (2) Design of LAG3-targeted immunotherapies, (3) Glycoengineering of viral envelope proteins for vaccines. His studies bridge basic immunology with translational medicine, emphasizing molecular mechanisms underlying immune responses.
Advising and Grants: Collaborates extensively with teams studying T cell signaling complexes and antiviral drug development (e.g., SARS-CoV-2 and HCV). His lab has pioneered structure-based approaches to vaccine design and immune checkpoint inhibition strategies.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Mariuzza Group at IBBR, specializing in structural and molecular immunology. Active in training graduate students through affiliations with the Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, & Genomics (CBBG) and Molecular & Cellular Biology (MOCB) programs.
