Roy Harvey Pearce (1919-2012) was a foundational figure in UC San Diego’s Literature Department, serving as its first chair and shaping its interdisciplinary focus. He held academic roles at UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and Ohio State before joining UCSD in 1963. As Professor, he emphasized historical and comparative approaches to literature, challenging formalist criticism to integrate cultural and historical contexts. He served as Associate Dean and Dean of Graduate Studies at UCSD and contributed to academic governance through roles in organizations like the National Council of Teachers of English.
His research centered on American literature, particularly the intersection of history and literary analysis. Key works include Savagism and Civilization (1953/1988), a seminal study on Native American representation, and The Continuity of American Poetry (1962), which won the Poetry Society of America Prize. His 1958 article Historicism Once More critiqued New Criticism, advocating for historical understanding in literary interpretation.
- Contributions: Established the Literature Department’s comparative framework and a unified Ph.D. program in Literature. Founded the Archive for New Poetry at UCSD.
- Awards: American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1966), Poetry Society of America Prize (1962).
Pearce advised early faculty members at UCSD, including Sigurd Burckhardt and Leonard Newmark, and collaborated on major editorial projects like the standard edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s works.
