Roy Gigengack is a Lecturer in Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He also works as a Medewerker at Universiteit Utrecht since 2021. His research focuses on qualitative methodologies, digital ethnography, and social policy, particularly addressing street children, healthcare decision-making, and university internationalization.
His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction and education. Key research themes include methodological debates in qualitative research, the implications of big data in ethnography, and sociocultural dynamics in healthcare contexts.
Roy’s publications analyze topics such as treatment abandonment in childhood cancer care in El Salvador, naturalism in post-naturalist research, and the challenges of internationalization in Dutch universities. He has supervised one PhD thesis on digital ethnography and big data methodologies.
