Roy Black is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University's College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. With over 25 years of experience in crop insurance issues in the United States, he serves as an expert reviewer for the Board of Directors of the U.S. Federal Crop Insurance Corporation.
Dr. Black earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and his B.S. from Montana State University. His academic journey has positioned him as a leading expert in agricultural risk management and insurance.
Professor Black's research spans multiple dimensions of agricultural economics, with particular focus on crop insurance mechanisms and risk management strategies. His work addresses critical issues in agricultural production systems, including marketing considerations, management of externalities, and the facilitation of insurance by the federal government. A significant portion of his research examines the design and implementation of crop insurance products, particularly the Group Risk Plan area-yield index insurance. His interdisciplinary approach integrates perspectives from climate change impacts on horticultural crop yields, contract design issues, and the interface between production economics and biological systems modeling.
Dr. Black's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on practical applications of agricultural economics to real-world farming challenges. His recent work centers on pricing methodologies for standing forage and immature crops, financial benchmarking for Michigan farms, and decision tools for harvest management following adverse weather events. These publications reflect his commitment to developing practical decision support tools for farmers and agricultural stakeholders.
Professor Black has been actively involved in teaching at Michigan State University, offering courses including ABM 435: Finance, AEC 855: Production Economics (with Scott Swinton), and AEC 932: Information Economics and Institutions in Agriculture and Natural Resources (with John Staatz).
His research has received funding from prestigious organizations including the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. Professor Black has collaborated extensively with researchers across multiple disciplines and institutions, including faculty at MSU, University of Kentucky, Ohio State, ERS/USDA, University of California-Davis, and the ARS/USDA National Dairy Forage Research Center.
