Alan Ker is a Professor and Elton R. Smith Chair in Food and Agricultural Policy at Michigan State University's Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics. He holds positions in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources and has served in leadership roles including Chair of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (2009-2014) and Director of the Institute for the Advanced Study of Food and Agricultural Policy (2014-?).
Education: Joint PhD in Economics and Statistics from North Carolina State University (1996). Prior roles include Professor and Head of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Arizona (2002-2007), and leadership in the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (2016-2017 President, 2021 Fellow).
Research focuses on agricultural policy, climate change impacts on agriculture, environmental crime analysis, crop insurance mechanisms, and risk management strategies. Notable contributions include studies on crop yield volatility, environmental policy effectiveness, and disease outbreak economic impacts in agricultural sectors.
Awards include the OAC Research Chair in Agricultural Risk and Policy (2019) and Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (2021). He currently serves as Managing Editor of the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics and leads initiatives such as the MSU Farm Policy & Risk Management Series.
His advisory work involves mentoring over 15 graduate students and collaborating with industry partners. Research outputs include over 70 peer-reviewed articles addressing agricultural economics challenges, climate adaptation, and policy design.
