Rowland Hughes is a Principal Research Fellow in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire, and Associate Director of the Doctoral College overseeing postgraduate research in Humanities, Engineering, Business, and Law. He holds a PhD from University College London (UCL) and has been at the University of Hertfordshire since 2003, serving in roles including Humanities Programme Tutor, School Research Tutor, and Acting Head of English Literature and Creative Writing.
His research focuses on early American republic literature, 19th-century American literature, Native American writing, ecocriticism, and the American West. Notable works include York Notes Companion to Nineteenth-Century American Literature and a critical edition of Magdalen King-Hall’s Life and Death of the Wicked Lady Skelton. His recent projects explore civil unrest in post-revolutionary New England, Indian Removal in the 1820s–1840s, and Jean Lafitte’s legacy.
Hughes has supervised numerous PhD students on topics such as modernist literature, gender studies, and indigenous narratives. He has served as an external examiner for American Studies programs at the University of Winchester and Plymouth.
