Rowena Ward is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong's School of Humanities and Social Inquiry, within the Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. She holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales. Her research focuses on transnational history, particularly the internment and repatriation of civilians during and after conflicts, gender dynamics in language education, and Japanese diaspora studies. Ward has led multiple grants including projects on post-WWII Japan, migration histories, and language policy. She is a recognized scholar in Japanese Studies, serving as President (2017-2019) and Treasurer (2019-2023) of the Japanese Studies Association of Australia. She received a Commendation from the Consul-General of Japan in 2016. Ward supervises PhD students in areas such as Japanese modern history, language politics, and migration studies. Her teaching includes Japanese language courses and contemporary Japanese politics.
Her research spans topics like civilian evacuation during WWII, gender in language classrooms, and the role of Japan in the Indo-Pacific. She has published widely on post-war repatriation, internment camps, and the intersection of gender and military occupations. Ward's work bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues in education and international relations.
