Rowena Gray is an Associate Professor and Graduate Chair in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Merced. She also serves as a Research Associate at the Centre for Economics, Policy, and History in Ireland and a Research Affiliate at Queen's University Centre for Economic History in Belfast. Her research focuses on economic history, inequality, urban economics, and globalization, with a particular emphasis on historical case studies in the United States and Europe.
Gray's work examines long-term economic trends such as technological change, housing market dynamics, immigration effects, and the impact of globalization on labor markets and regional development. Notable projects include analyzing racial inequality through occupational tasks, the local effects of globalization shocks, and the role of electricity in structural transformation. She has received significant funding from organizations like the National Science Foundation, Russell Sage Foundation, and Hellman Faculty Fellows Award.
Her research has been recognized with awards such as the Larry Neal Prize (2013-2014) and has been featured in outlets like the American Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, and Explorations in Economic History.
