Rowan Lymbery is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the School of Biological Sciences, The University of Western Australia. With a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from UWA (2014-2018), Dr. Lymbery has been a Research Associate at UWA since 2021 with a brief period as Principle Biologist at Bennelongia Environmental Consultants in 2020. Their research focuses on sexual selection, sperm-egg interactions, and parental effects on offspring fitness.
Dr. Lymbery's educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Zoology from UWA (2009-2012) followed by a PhD in Evolutionary Biology (2014-2018). They have received numerous awards and fellowships including the Syracuse University Postdoctoral Fellowship, UWA School of Biological Sciences Strategic Funding, and multiple Australasian Evolution Society awards.
Research interests center on ejaculate-mediated paternal effects, environmental effects on gametes, multivariate selection on ejaculate traits, and gamete-level mate choice via sperm chemotaxis. Dr. Lymbery studies these processes in live-bearing fish (guppies), fruit flies, and broadcast-spawning marine invertebrates using experimental and molecular approaches. Their work explores the molecular processes controlling sperm behavior and function, with particular focus on how female reproductive fluids influence sperm performance and offspring fitness.
Dr. Lymbery's publications reveal a strong trend in reproductive biology, particularly examining how environmental factors affect gamete interactions and offspring outcomes. Their research spans evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, and ecological adaptation, with a growing emphasis on conservation implications of reproductive processes.

Dr. Lymbery co-supervises Honours and PhD students and has been involved in teaching as a Guest Lecturer and Module Coordinator for "Sex in the Sea" (BIOL5504) and as a Unit Demonstrator for "Behavioural Ecology" (ANIM3365). They have secured multiple research grants including projects on how female salmon influence male fertility outcomes and reproductive fitness consequences of variation in mitochondrial DNA in broadcast spawning mussels.
Working with collaborators at institutions like Monash University, Dr. Lymbery is part of an active research network focused on reproductive biology and evolutionary processes. Their work contributes to understanding fundamental biological mechanisms with potential implications for conservation and species management.
