Rouzbeh Amini is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Bioengineering at Northeastern University’s College of Engineering. His research focuses on biomechanics, mechanobiology, and biotransport, with an emphasis on soft tissue systems and women’s health. He leads the Laboratory for Soft Tissue Biomechanics, which investigates multiscale tissue responses under mechanical loading. Amini holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (2010) and has received prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER Award and 2022 College of Engineering Faculty Fellow recognition.
Key research themes include:
- Tricuspid valve biomechanics and pregnancy-induced remodeling
- Iris mechanics and glaucoma pathophysiology
- Brain-tissue interactions in Chiari malformation
- Hydrogel-based wound healing solutions
His lab employs advanced experimental techniques like DENSE MRI and develops multiscale computational models to bridge microstructural and tissue-level mechanics. Collaborative projects include vascular adaptations during pregnancy and ocular biomechanics in disease states.
Education:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, University of Minnesota, 2010
Awards:
- 2022 College of Engineering Faculty Fellow
- NSF CAREER Award
- 2025 Skalak Award Honorable Mention
Teaching contributions include project-based learning initiatives in biomedical computing and computational biology education. His work intersects engineering and clinical applications, addressing unmet needs in cardiovascular, ocular, and women’s health domains.
