Roshni Rainbow is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen's University (Smith Engineering), with cross appointments in the Centre for Health Innovation. Her research focuses on morphogenesis-driven engineering of functional musculoskeletal tissues, particularly cartilage regeneration through mechanochemical processes. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University (2011) and has expertise in scaffold-free tissue engineering, inflammation-matrix interactions, and biomaterial development. Key research themes include stem cell control, bioreactor systems, and translational applications in regenerative medicine.
Education: PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Brown University, 2011), MS in Biotechnology (Tufts University, 2004), BS in Biomedical Engineering (Boston University, 2002). Professional experience includes postdoctoral work under Dr. Li Zeng at TEACRS before joining Queen's in 2018.
Research interests span musculoskeletal biology, medical biotechnology, and health systems innovation. Her lab investigates scaffold materials' effects on chondrocyte behavior under inflammation, 3D bioprinting for cartilage repair, and real-time monitoring of disease progression via near-infrared imaging. Recent work emphasizes mechanochemical interactions between neighboring tissues during cartilage development.
Publications highlight contributions to drug delivery systems, biomaterial characterization, and osteoarthritis modeling. Active collaborations exist across engineering, medicine, and health innovation sectors.
