Dr. Roshan Gunathilake is a Conjoint Lecturer at the School of Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Health & Medicine, University of Newcastle, Australia. He works as a Consultant Geriatrician and General Physician at the John Hunter Hospital and Visiting Geriatrician & Consultant Physician at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. He completed his physician training in Queensland and Newcastle, obtaining fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in 2015.
Dr. Gunathilake received his Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
His research spans two distinct periods with complementary expertise. Early in his career (2007-2009), he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California San Francisco focusing on skin biology, particularly stratum corneum barrier function and keratinocyte-melanocyte interactions. After moving to Australia in 2009, he shifted his focus to geriatric medicine with special interest in the epidemiology of geriatric syndromes. His recent work examines the relationship between various factors (including obesity, hyponatremia, vitamin D levels, and comorbidities) and outcomes in older adults, particularly regarding cognitive function, falls, and fracture management.
Dr. Gunathilake's publication record shows a clear transition from dermatological research to geriatric medicine, with his most recent works focusing on orthogeriatrics, cognitive function in aging populations, osteoporosis management, and patient safety interventions in rural healthcare settings. His earlier works centered on skin barrier function, particularly in HIV patients and across different skin pigmentation types.
