Carbine's research focuses on comparative feminist/womanist/mujerista theologies, theological anthropology, and public/political theologies of the U.S. Catholic Church. She explores intersections of religion with gender, race, culture, and social justice, emphasizing experiential learning and theological responses to eco-justice challenges. Her publications and editorial work (e.g., Critical Theology) highlight feminist perspectives on theological education and democratic practices.
Her recent scholarship trends include ecofeminist theology (Critical Theology, 2018; Planetary Solidarity, 2017), analysis of U.S. public Catholicism (JASR, 2016; Critical Theology, 2016), and pedagogical innovation (Teaching Theology and Religion, 2010).

Carbine’s teaching integrates theology with interdisciplinary programs (Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Latinx Studies) and includes community-based learning. She has held leadership roles in the American Academy of Religion and Catholic Theological Society of America, and her current book project Nevertheless We Persist expands on feminist public theology in U.S. social justice movements.
