معرفی
Professor Rose McGready is a world-leading expert in tropical maternal and child health with over 28 years of experience at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit on the Thailand-Myanmar border, part of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit. Her extensive work has documented over 80,000 pregnancies in resource-limited settings, fundamentally changing our understanding of malaria's impact during pregnancy.
Her research focuses on:
- Maternal malaria treatment protocols and drug safety in pregnancy
- Effects of submicroscopic malaria infections on pregnancy outcomes
- Healthcare delivery systems for marginalized border populations
- Interactions between malaria and other infectious diseases during pregnancy
Professor McGready's groundbreaking work has demonstrated that even single, asymptomatic malaria infections can have significant detrimental effects, leading to miscarriage and other complications - a critical finding in resource-constrained settings. Her research has directly translated into improved clinical practices across Southeast Asia.
Recent research directions include:
- Epigenetic changes associated with gestational diabetes in marginalized populations
- Growth and neurodevelopment outcomes in children from the INTERBIO-21st Newborn Study
- Migrant women's experiences with antenatal care across urban and rural settings
- Iron supplementation and immune responses to maternal vaccination (IRONMUM study)
Through her leadership of the mother and child health team, Professor McGready has emphasized the importance of building local research capacity as an essential component of sustainable healthcare improvements in the communities she serves.
