Rosario Alvarez Blanco

Rosario Alvarez Blanco is a Professor of Galician and Portuguese Philology at the Faculty of Philology, University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), and a researcher at the Galician Institute of Linguistics (ILG). She earned her BA and PhD in Romance Philology from USC (1974, 1980), with a doctoral thesis on the Galician personal pronoun.

• Research Focus: Galician linguistic variation (diatopic/diachronic), comparative Portuguese-Galician grammar, and editing of medieval Galician texts.
• Leadership Roles: Former Vice-Rector for Teaching Staff (1990-94), Director of the Department of Galician Philology (1995-99), and Director of the Royal Galician Academy (RAG) grammar project. Current President of the Galician Culture Council (since 2018).
• Projects: Co-director of the Gondomar digital corpus project and director of the Treasury of Galician and Portuguese Heritage Lexicon, involving teams from Galicia, Portugal, and Brazil.
• Affiliations: Full member of the Royal Galician Academy (since 2003), coordinating its Grammar Seminar and directing the Language section.

Her recent work includes contributions to the Manual of Galician Linguistics (2025) and studies on lexical heritage in Gallaecia, reflecting her expertise in historical and regional linguistic systems.
