Rosalind Smyth is a Professor of Child Health and Director of the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH) at University College London (UCL) since October 2012, collaborating closely with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) NHS Foundation Trust as Honorary Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician and Non-executive Director.
- She pioneered three key research areas:
- Immunopathology of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis
- Systematic reviews and clinical trials in cystic fibrosis (CF) and genetic disorders
- Advocacy for safe and effective medicines for children
- Her groundbreaking epidemiological study in The Lancet linked colonic strictures in CF patients to pancreatic enzyme supplements, prompting regulatory reforms that eradicated this complication in the UK.
Scientific awards include:
- Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), 2015
- NIHR Senior Investigator Award, 2008
- Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, 2006
- Fellow of the European Respiratory Society, 2014
- Fellow (Honorary) of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, 2010
