Rosalie Stoner is a Lecturer and Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Classics at Yale University. She holds an AB summa cum laude in Classics with a Medieval Studies certificate from Princeton (2015) and a PhD in Classical Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago (2021). Her research focuses on Quintilian’s educational philosophy, particularly how his Institutio Oratoria fosters virtuous oratory through relational dynamics (teacher-student, father-son, friendship). Her broader interests include ancient Mediterranean educational practices, Roman oratorical traditions, early Christian adaptations of classical ideas, and the interplay between rhetoric and philosophy.
Her current book project explores Quintilian’s ethical framework for the 'good man skilled in speaking' as a response to Plato’s concerns about rhetoric’s moral dangers. Recent work includes an analysis of Cicero’s ethical portrayal in Quintilian’s writings. She has no listed awards or grants but actively contributes to classical scholarship through teaching and research. No advisees are currently listed.
