Rosa Maria Garcia Periago is a Professor of English Philology at the Universidad de Murcia, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Department of English Philology. Her research focuses on Shakespearean adaptations in Indian cinema, diaspora studies, and postcolonial literary analysis. She holds a PhD from Universidad de Murcia (2013), titled Shakespeare Transnacional: Su Presencia en Bollywood y en la Diáspora.
Her work explores how Shakespeare’s plays are reinterpreted through Indian cultural contexts, emphasizing themes like gender, colonial legacies, and transnational identity. Key contributions include analyses of films like In Othello (2003), Maqbool (2003), and Ram-Leela, highlighting their challenges to Western hegemony and exploration of local socio-political issues.
Publications span academic journals (Cahiers Élisabéthains, Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses) and edited volumes on Austen-Shakespeare intersections and global Shakespeare. She co-edited Jane Austen and William Shakespeare: A Love Affair in Literature, Film and Performance (2019), exploring their cultural resonance.
Her research group, Shakespeare and Elizabethan Literature, investigates cross-cultural adaptations. Current projects include translating prison Shakespeare films into Spanish and analyzing feminist reinterpretations of The Taming of the Shrew in Bollywood.
