His educational background includes a BA (Humanities) from St. Pats/DCU, HDipEd from NUI Galway, MPhil in Peace Studies from Trinity College Dublin, and an EdD from St. Pats/DCU. His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding educational equity and social justice.
Mc Daid's research centers on teacher migration and mobility, refugee education, cultural mediation, and teacher diversity. His work examines how diverse teaching staff can enhance educational experiences for minority ethnic and language students, with particular focus on recognition of first languages in schools and effective cultural mediation practices. His scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in increasingly diverse educational settings across Ireland and Europe.
His publication record reveals consistent focus on migrant teacher recognition, showing evolution from early work on linguistic barriers to current comprehensive frameworks addressing systemic challenges in teacher diversity. Recent publications (2023-2025) increasingly address urgent contexts like Ukrainian refugee teacher integration while maintaining his foundational interest in structural barriers faced by internationally educated teachers.
Mc Daid has secured significant research funding including a €255,000 grant from the Department of Justice and Equality (AMIF) for the Migrant Teacher Project (2019-2023), €100,000 from the Department of Justice and Equality (NIFP) (2017-2019), and multiple smaller grants addressing migrant education, Roma cultural mediation, and Irish expatriate teachers in the UAE.
His scholarly engagement extends through extensive conference participation across Europe and beyond, with notable presentations at ECER, ATEE, and ESAI conferences. His work demonstrates strong collaboration with international researchers, particularly in the MIREDS project examining migration and education systems across Europe.
