Dr. Roopesh Syamaladevi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta. He leads the Food Safety and Sustainability Engineering (FSSE) Research Group, focusing on advancing technologies for food safety, environmental sustainability, and water treatment. His work integrates cold plasma, UV LED, and nanobubble technologies to address challenges in agri-food processing, biofilm control, and waste management.
Dr. Syamaladevi holds a Ph.D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from Washington State University. His research has garnered awards including the 2025 International Engagement Award and a Global Affairs Canada scholarship. He teaches courses such as NU FS 353 (Unit Operations in Food Processing) and NU FS 311 (Introduction to Food Processing).
Key research areas include microbial decontamination in food processing environments, mycotoxin degradation in grains, and 3D printing of plant-based foods. His lab develops novel methods like plasma-activated nanobubble water (PANBW) for wastewater treatment and seed decontamination. Current projects are funded by Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Alberta Innovates.
He maintains active collaborations with industry partners and has secured patents on technologies like PAWB barley steeping and plasma-integrated cooling systems. The FSSE lab is equipped with BSL-2 facilities and advanced process engineering tools.
