Dr. Roni Goldshmid is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU), part of the College of Engineering. He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering (Technion, 2020), MSc in Environmental Engineering (Technion, 2016), and BSc in Environmental Economics and Policy (UC Berkeley, 2012). Prior to his faculty role, he was a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech (2023–2024) and a Postdoctoral Scholar at Caltech’s Graduate Aerospace Laboratories (2020–2023). His research focuses on fluid dynamics, environmental flows, and novel sensing technologies, including visual anemometry using vegetation movement and turbulence characterization in geophysical systems. Goldshmid’s work bridges engineering, environmental science, and computer vision, with applications in climate change mitigation and wind energy.
Research Highlights: Goldshmid’s grants include NSF-funded initiatives like the “Stories of Women in Fluids” anthology project and studies on flow-structure interactions. His experimental work examines anabatic flows, jet dynamics in rotating systems, and turbulence statistics. He co-developed a deep learning-based anemometer calibration system and pioneered visual anemometry via tree motion analysis.
Teaching & Outreach: He teaches aerospace engineering courses at SDSU and Caltech, emphasizing hands-on experimentation. Goldshmid is a leader in equity initiatives, co-founding the Stories of Women in Fluids (SOWIF) project to mentor underrepresented groups. He also mentors first-year STEM students through Caltech’s Future Ignited program and has a decade of experience in K-12 STEM outreach.
Awards & Recognition:
- Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow (Caltech, 2023)
- Teaching Excellence Awards (Technion, 2016–2020)
- Grinshpen Prize for Research Excellence (Technion, 2016)
- Rising Star in Mechanical Engineering (Stanford, 2022)
Labs & Teams: Collaborates with Caltech’s Graduate Aerospace Laboratories and leads SDSU’s Experimental Fluids group. His work integrates experimental fluid mechanics with computational tools, emphasizing reproducibility through open datasets (e.g., CaltechDATA, Mendeley Data).
