Dr. Xiaofeng Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU), affiliated with the College of Engineering. He holds an Associate Fellow status with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). His research focuses on experimental fluid dynamics, turbulence, and advanced flow diagnostic techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and pressure field reconstruction. Dr. Liu’s work spans aerodynamics, cavitation phenomena, multiphase flows, and biomedical applications of fluid mechanics.
Education: Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. His expertise includes flow visualization, non-intrusive measurement methods, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) integration with experimental data. He has pioneered techniques like the rotating parallel ray method for pressure reconstruction and contributed to understanding cavity shear layer dynamics and vortex-corner interactions.
Key awards include the 2022 AIAA San Diego Section Outstanding Contribution Award, 2019 Most Influential Faculty Award (SDSU College of Engineering), and the Best Faculty Award in Aerospace Engineering (2016-2017). His research has been published in journals like Physics of Fluids, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and ACS Sensors, with a focus on advancing pressure field analysis and turbulence modeling.
His lab activities involve collaborative projects on microfluidic biosensors, hypersonic flow studies, and hydrodynamic modeling. He has advised numerous student researchers and contributed to SDSU’s wind tunnel and water tunnel facilities, emphasizing undergraduate engineering education and hands-on experimentation.
